Project R.E.C.E.S.S.

We were sitting in on a session of "Best Practices of FMIGs" at the AAFP National Conference when we heard about the Meharry Medical College FMIG's idea they called "Project R.E.C.E.S.S." The fun and interactive health fair geared toward kids sounded like a fantastic idea, and we were excited to bring it back to UMKC!
Project R.E.C.E.S.S. stands for "Restoring Exercise, Cutting calories, Emphasizing hygiene, Stopping Substance abuse." The goal of the project is promoting life-long healthy habits, specifically physical activity, good nutrition, oral hygiene, and avoiding substance abuse. I took the idea to MSAC, who agreed it was a great idea for the 2009 Fall Community Service Day. Now UMKC SOM Student organizations such as MSAC, FMIG, AMA, and SNMA are coming together to get this project off the ground! Each student organization will take on one of the project's themes and set up related kid-friendly activities.
Tabitha and Tiffany will represent FMIG on the planning committee, along with other student leaders. Keep an eye out for the date and location. Email Mallika Thampy or me, the Chairs of the event, if you’d like to get involved!
